In withdrawing, we completely untied the Bolsheviks’ hands, making them complete masters of the whole situation and yielding to them the entire arena of the revolution.

23:55

In protest at the Bolsheviks’ actions, the Mensheviks and Right SRs demonstratively withdraw from the Congress of Soviets and head to the City Duma.

There was a terrible crash followed by shots in the next room. It transpired that some infiltrating sailors had hurled a bomb from the upper gallery in the corridor. A few minutes later, a cadet with a head wound was brought in to us, while another one walked in on his own two feet. Kishkin dressed their wounds. Bernatsky lent his handkerchief for a bandage. We then extinguished the fire burning in the corridor as a result of the explosion.

A live shell fired from the Peter and Paul Fortress towards the Winter Palace fell in the vicinity of Sennaya square, allegedly killing a family of four.

23:35

Mensheviks, right-wing Social Revolutionaries and members of the front committees strongly object Bolsheviks' actions.

23:22

The Bolshevik faction has absolutely nothing against Martov's suggestion.

23:15

Internationalist Menshevik Julius Martov urges the delegates of the Congress to discuss, first and foremost, the question of peaceful crisis resolution.

The news of the Bolshevik capture of the Winter Palace is being refuted. The fighting is ongoing. From the balcony you can see the sky being illuminated by incessant lightning-like flashes. And you can hear dull blasts. It would appear that they’re shooting from the Palace as well – firing on the Neva and the Aurora. They’re not surrendering. But – they’re almost completely unprotected: there’s no one left but the cadets, the Shock Battalion and the Women’s Battalion.

Kerensky departed first thing in a private vehicle. Managed to steal away after all! Meanwhile, this lot – guilty of nothing but their pawnlike status and obedience – must endure heavy gunfire.

If they’re still alive, that is.

23:12

There’s terrible machinegun and artillery fire going on... Word is, they’re firing at the Winter Palace. I’ve been gripped by a kind of numbness… I feel pity for no one and nothing. But surely this cannot be possible! It’s temporary! Surely my heart can’t be forever benumbed! Oh, Lord! Oh, Lord! Save Russia.

23:10

Emerging onto the street with Maria Valentinovna, I failed to find a cabman. So we set out on foot. We’d turned into Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt when suddenly we heard the sound of gunfire and the clatter of bullets. If my courage wavered in that moment, can you imagine the state of my wife? – Running from porch to porch and hiding in doorways under cover of darkness – the streetlamps not having been lit – we somehow made it home.

23:07

There are a lot of cadets in the gallery, some, with their possessions, are prepared to leave, they are in a depressed mood. In my absence, the ministers received most of the 3-inch shrapnel, which hit the Alexandrovksy Hall of the Winter Palace from the square, having blasted through the wall and damaged the portrait of Peter the Great.

Breaking news

A shell fired from the Peter and Paul Fortress broke through a wall of the Winter Palace.

23:05

From the opposite bank of the Neva, 30-35 shrapnell-shell shots were made from 3-inch cannons: the majority exploded over the Neva and the cornice of the palace was damaged. Also, there is fire from the cannons under the arch of the General Staff building.

23:02

Six shots were made from 6-inch cannons, from the Naryshkin Bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress: two service rounds and two blanks. Case-shots exploded in the palace on the third floor, not far from Kerensky’s office, and above the halls where the Provisional Government sat.
