New York Iroquois Send Word They Don't Need Conversion

The Iroquois indians, of Northern New York State, have sent Edward H. Gohl to Washington to ask Congress to remove three churches from their reservation. Mr. Gohl--or 'Chef Rainbow' as he is called by his Indian brothers is an artist who spends his time between the Latin Quarter of Paris and the Iroquois tribes along Lake Ontario. The Iroquois adopted him into their tribe and he spends the larger part of each year with them. He transacts most of their business for them. Some missionaries, of different creeds decided the poor red men should be converted and succeeding in building churches on the reservation. But the Iroquois don't want to be converted and they don't want the missionaries meddling around them. The chiefs lit their pipes one day and talked the matter over, and then decided to send "Chief Rainbow" to see the Great White Father and ask that the churches be put off the reservation. "Tell the Great White Father," said Old Chief Buffalo. "that we need the land the churches took from us to raise potatoes on."
