Today is already the 23rd. anniversary of the death of dear Papa. Such circumstances he never lived to see! God, how trying for poor. Russia! In the evening before dinner we attended vespers.
The KornilovCommander in Chief of the Petrograd command - from 18 March 1917 business is lighting-up uncontrollably. Slowly, gradually this story is stripping off the final scraps of common sense. See more
When I was painting a realistic picture, for the first few hours – and then for the first few weeks – the picture, in general, was turning out true-to-life: only collapses, crossings-out, unknown places we involuntarily filled up, with an alleviation on the side of at least some kind of sense. But as the dark places were filled in – with surprise you may assure yourself that there, apart from lies, hypocrisy, insanity – was yet the absence of common sense to the highest level… a level which you can’t just hop onto.
We wait. The task has been given to all. The password and alarms have been set. Our signal of action - a telegram addressed to me from Petrograd, signed by Antonov-Ovseyenko: “Send out the charter.” See more
This means - send out destroyers and landing troops to Petrograd 5 thousand people strong. I keep the password secret. Systematically, without excessive fuss, we prepare.
The first meeting of the Military Revolutionary Committee took place. The Organisational Bureau has presented a report on a number of tasks to be solved at the meetings, and the establishment of a liaison service with local and suburban units. See more
On the same day, a number of measures were taken at the bureau’s meeting to prevent possible excesses in connection with the Cossacks’ scheduled procession and the defence of Petrograd.
There recently emerged in the Soviet of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies a large schism among the Bolsheviks. Zinoviev, Trotsky et al considered a public declaration essential, whatever its results might be, and they regarded these results with pessimism. Lenin alone believes that seizing the power of democracy will certainly extirpate war and right all over the country. See more
Thus, the former among others are supporters of a public declaration, but some view it with despair, and Lenin sees in it the foresight of goodness. Some suggest that a public declaration isn’t necessary, for it would undermine suffrage in the Institutional assembly and in the party of the Bolsheviks, suffrage which is right now strong.
Rumours about the Bolshevik rally in the coming days spread around the city, worrying and disturbing everyone. In these days, there was given - a completely academic - order to arrest Lenin.
Tereschenko, whom I met this afternoon at the Provisional Council, told me that Scobeleff had to-day held more conciliatory language and had spoken of the instructions which he had received as representing, not the demands, but the wishes of the Russian democracy as to the attitude to be adopted by their delegate should the subjects touched on come up for discussion at the conference. The question as to whether Scobeleff would accompany him to Paris would not, he added, be settled till the close of the debate on Monday, the 5th. Tereschenko is much perturbed by the statement recently made in the House of Commons that the conference will deal exclusively .with the conduct of the war. It had, he said, greatly added to his difficulties, as, though the conduct of the war must naturally form the main object of discussion, it was unnecessary to tell the Russian democracy at such a critical moment as the present that all discussion of our war aims would be barred.
