On June 8th, Kerenski degraded General Gurko from his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Western Front, and appointed him to command a division in the Kazan Military District. The General had resigned on May 28th, refusing to be responsible for his command after the publication of Kerenski’s “ Declaration of the Rights of Soldiers.
About the time of my morning walk, the new commander-inchief of the Petrograd Military District — General Polovtsev — detained Alexis and me from our walk in the garden for 20 minutes. The weather was fine. At 3:15 everyone went for a walk; we chopped down another two trees.
Kharkov, Russia. "Lynch law" has been invoked by the peasants with good effect for the suppression of thievery in the towns and villages in the vicinity of Kharkov, according to advices from that city. The peasants, indignant at the release of offenders by the local militia, have taken the law into their own hands,and in several instances thieves have been beaten to death. See more
Organized bands which flourished under the protection of old police system receive little mercy. The whipping post has become the accepted form of punishment for lesser offenses, including selling of home-made intoxicants.
Yesterday the commandant of the Tsar's residence spoke in detail about what the royal family is doing now. And it is hard. In general, everyone is right; the Cadets are right, Gorky with his "two souls" (passive East and active West) is right, and there is an ugly truth in Bolshevism also. See more
I see nothing ahead, although I do not lose optimism. All of them, both "old" and "new", reside in our hearts- in mine at least. I am suspended in the air; no land now, and no sky. For all that, Petersburg is again unusually beautiful.
Is there a Way to a Just Peace? Is there a way to peace without an exchange of annexations, without the division of spoils among the capitalist robbers? There is: through a workers’ revolution against the capitalists of the world. Russia today is nearer to the beginning of such a revolution than any other country. Only in Russia can power pass to existing institutions, to the Soviets, immediately, peacefully, without an uprising, for the capitalists cannot resist the Soviets of Workers’, Soldiers’ and Peasants’ Deputies. With such a transfer of power it would be possible to curb the capitalists, now making thousands of millions in profits from contracts, to expose all their tricks, arrest the millionaire embezzlers of public property, break their unlimited power. The road to peace lies before us. Let us not be afraid to take it.
