The Russian army had become enamoured of politics, and all its thoughts were directed

towards the rear. It was obvious that the mistrust which had been sown by agitators between

the officers and men had destroyed all fighting efficiency. Yet the Command still pretended to

be optimistic. General Ruzski said that the first fight would bring the officers back to their

own. General Radko Dimitriev pretended to believe that his army would be a better fighting

machine in two months than it had ever been before ! General Dragomirov, the Chief of Staff

of the Front, said that the army would right itself if the anti-war party at Petrograd did not get

the upper hand. No one dreamed of an attempt to restore discipline by force, probably

because such an attempt would have been condemned by the Government as

counter-revolution, yet such an attempt was possible, and it was the only chance.

We have been on a few excursions to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Picasso was very struck by the magnificence of the ruins, and each time we turned around we would find him on the top of some ancient column trying to get the best view of the various fragments of Roman sculpture which attracted his eye. Diaghilev was less excited. It was not the first time he had seen these wonders, and the hot sun exhausted him. See more

At this lunch he had been unexpectedly called away, so that Dobuzhinsky and I were left at Donon’s to lunch alone. By a lucky coincidence, Benois and Grabar, who had been nearby at the Winter Palace, came in at just that moment, and we all had a very nice lunch together. See more
