Как было хорошо дышать тобою в марте
И слышать на дворе, со снегом и хвоёй
На солнце, поутру, вне лиц, имен и партий,
Ломающее лед дыхание твое!

Казалось, облака несут, плывя на запад,
Народам со дворов, со снегом и хвоёй,
Журчащий, как ручьи, как солнце сонный
запах
Всё здешнее, всю грусть, всё русское твое.

И теплая капель, буравя спозаранку
Песок у желобов, грачи, и звон тепла
Гремели о тебе, о том, что, иностранка,
Ты по сердцу себе приют у нас нашла.

Что эта изо всех великих революций
Светлейшая, не станет крови лить, что ей
И Кремль люб, и то, что чай тут пьют
из блюдца.
Как было хорошо дышать красой твоей!

Казалось, ночь свята, как копоть в катакомбах,
В глубокой тишине последних дней поста
Был слышен дерн и дром, но не был слышен
Зомбарт
И грудью всей дышал Социализм Христа.

Смеркалось тут... Меж тем свинец к вагонным
дверцам
(Сиял апрельский день) – вдали, в чужих
краях
Навешивался вспех ганноверцем, ландверцем.
Дышал локомотив. День пел, пчелой роясь.

А здесь стояла тишь, как в сердце катакомбы,
Был слышен бой сердец. И в этой тишине
Почудилось: вдали курьерский несся, пломбы
Тряслись, и взвод курков мерещился стране.

Он – «С Богом, – кинул, сев; и стал
горланить, — к черту! —
Отчизну увидав: – черт с ней, чего глядеть!
Мы у себя, эй жги, здесь Русь, да будет стерта!
Еще не всё сплылось; лей рельсы из людей!

Лети на всех парах! Дыми, дави и мимо!
Покуда целы мы, покуда держит ось.
Здесь не чужбина нам, дави, здесь край
родимый,
Здесь так знакомо всё, дави, стесненья брось!»

Теперь ты – бунт. Теперь ты – топки
полыханье.
И чад в котельной, где на головы котлов
Пред взрывом плещет ад Балтийскою лоханью
Людскую кровь, мозги и пьяный флотский
блёв.

This was, however, only a local remedy. “ The freest army in the world ” turned its attention to private cellars, and for weeks there was drunken shooting every day in one district or another. The Left Press wrote that this cellar-looting was the result of bourgeois propaganda, which of course was nonsense. It was simply the natural result of removing all control from armed men, of continuing to feed them, and of giving them nothing to do.

During the morning on my walk I saw two infantrymen ofthe First Battalion coming from Tsarskoe Selo in order to verify the truth of rumors concerning us and about the detachment here. One of these infantrymen had served in our house. It was clear and 21 degrees of frost.
