The last day of the old year, and what a year! I remember how, in an article I wrote before the last New Year, I expressed the wish that in 1917, those hopes of 17 October 1905 which had not been made a reality would be brought to fruition at last. How far the present situation has outrun those hopes - and it has destroyed them at the same time, as the tyranny of old has been replaced by tyranny of a small coterie. How sad and lonely it is to see in the New Year in this way. Dolgorukov promised to knock on my wall at 12 o’clock. This is the only communication we are allowed on this New Year’s Eve.

How funny. They gave us “holiday” sausages, more than a pound per person. They want to make our life seem slightly better with this. A soldier carried out this task with a satisfied look. But we were not given any hot food. Around 2 o’clock they brought only one spoon of cold buckwheat kasha. I still don’t know the reasons for this kitchen “strike.” The sausage was definitely stuffed with salt. Today there was not only no lunch, but no walk either. The latter is much more painful. In the cell, heart palpitations really bother me.

I’m so afraid that the Kornilov tragedy is only the beginning of a string of such events that will last until “economic prerequisites” destroy the cause of the revolution. And only then would the descendants of Louis Blanc and Bakunin weep from desperation and impotent rage. Is this what we have been waiting for? Is this what we have been hoping for in early March?

We also have surprising heat. From the beginning of May until now there has been no rain, it is humid, dusty, oppressive. The general political situation is similar to the weather conditions. There is no invigorating, gracious rain, and no storm with gale and thunder.

Milyukov and Shingaryev went to the front. While they were gone, a Provisional Government meeting was unexpectedly called late one evening in Prince Lvov's apartment. Kerensky and Tereshchenko took it upon themselves to sharply attack the point about the Straits and Milyukov’s entire role in the Provisional Government. I was the only one to stand up for him. The situation is getting worse with every day. We are heading towards the abyss. A revolution would be our undoing, but we are surely heading for one. And even without a revolution everything is coming undone at a dizzying rate. The supply situation in Petrograd is already critical. If not today then tomorrow we will run out of bread. The soldiers are grumbling, and the garrison is unreliable. At least, as you know, our military power and technical capabilities have grown to unprecedented levels. Our spring offensive will be supported by a hitherto inconceivable quantity of shells. If we can just hang on till the spring…
