It’s so strange to not see the wounded, to be without this job. On August 28th it would have been three years since we started working at the hospital, but our resignation has ruined everything. But I still hope that maybe, if there’s a lot of work and not enough people, they will bring us back. But it’s just a fantasy - it won’t come true.
There’s enough nurses without us. But I doubt that any of them love this job as much as we did, I don’t know if any of them have this feeling of helping people, lessening their suffering. Sometimes you might hurt someone, offend someone unwillingly. All the surgeries are very interesting. How many new people we’ve met! My health wouldn’t allow me to visit other hospitals, which is a shame, and I regret that a lot, but I’ve had no strength for it this last year.
The Overflow of Crimea
From north to south, waves of fugitives flooded the entire southern coast of the Crimea. Yalta is crowded with visitors. Hotels are fully packed. There are no free buildings in the city at all. Prices for apartments and rooms have increased by 50%. To prepare for the winter, wealthy people do not hesitate before buying expensive mansions. As a result, an unprecedented speculation has developed.
Perched solitary in my high room that looks one way upon the Southern buttresses of the chapel, golden with this autumn sunshine, and on the other side, right over the roof to the castle [Windsor] gigantic on its hills.
The departure of foreigners.
Regarding the mass exodus of foreigners - French and English from Russia. In the circles of the Provisional Government ii is viewed as regrettable, and that it is not surprising that, given the unbalanced situation in which we are in, foreigners prefer not to expose themselves to trouble. After all, unfortunately, it is not without reason that they say that in the event of the complete triumph of the Bolsheviks, representatives of foreign powers will prefer to leave Russia.
In connection with the KornilovCommander in Chief of the Petrograd command - from 18 March 1917 conspiracy recently there has been a massive departure of foreigners from Russia. The mercenaries of the bourgeois press try to relate this phenomenon with the “rumours of peace” or even “the triumph of Bolshevism” in St.Petersburg and Moscow. See more
On an ancient English steamboat (which we wouldn’t miss if it were drowned by Germans), I returned to Russia. We reached Bergen after a long fifteen hours, with dimmed lights, in life vests, boats at the ready.
On the whole I am fairly happy, but I have decided that God never intended me to do any regular work.
It’s not the West who is hardworking, it’s the East. The West dallies. It works carelessly. But the moral labor is in the East - the East always prays to God for help.
The weather was warm and overcast. During the day I cut firewood, and the girls played on the wooden bridge with tennis balls.
The Command tries to achieve annexation of Courland and Latvia to Prussia, and Lithuania as well if we manage to capture it. Courland and Latvia - as protectorates, Lithuania - as a personal junction. Lithuanian border should be shifted as far into the South as possible so that it can serve as a buffer should Poland launch any offensives. Poland should be as small as possible; perhaps Ukraine can become bigger.
For a while I have had no desire to make notes. Everything is going to pieces. There is a kind of sickness in people, and a large part of it is dishonesty. I squeak under anxiety and labour. There are no rays of light. It advances hunger and the cold. The war is not ending, although there are many rumours.
Yesterday my mother had a seizure.
