Я кончу, видно, свою запись в аду. Впрочем – ад был в Москве, у нас еще предадье, т.е. не лупят нас из тяжелых орудий и не душат в домах. Московские зверства не преувеличены – преуменьшены.

Очень странно то, что я сейчас скажу. Но... мне СКУЧНО писать. Да, среди красного тумана, среди этих омерзительных и небывалых ужасов, на дне этого бессмыслия – скука. Вихрь событий и – неподвижность. Все рушится, летит к черту и – нет жизни. Нет того, что делает жизнь: элемента борьбы. В человеческой жизни всегда присутствует элемент волевой борьбы; его сейчас почти нет. Его так мало в центре событий, что они точно сами делаются, хотя и посредством людей. И пахнут мертвечиной. Даже в землетрясении, в гибели и несчастии совсем внешнем, больше жизни и больше смысла, чем в самой гуще ныне происходящего, – только начинающего свой круг, быть может. Зачем, к чему теперь какие-то человеческие смыслы, мысли и слова, когда стреляют вполне бессмысленные пушки, когда все делается посредством "как бы" людей и уже не людей? Страшен автомат – машина в подобии человека. Не страшнее ли человек – в полном подобии машины, т.е. без смысла и без воли?

Это – война, только в последнем ее, небывалом, идеальном пределе: обнаженная от всего, голая, последняя. Как если бы пушки сами застреляли, слепые, не знающие куда и зачем. И человеку в этой "войне машин" было бы – сверх всех представимых чувств – еще СКУЧНО.

Я буду, конечно, писать... Так, потому что я летописец. Потому что я дышу, сплю, ем... Но я не живу.

Завтра предполагается ограбление большевиками Государственного Банка. За отказом служащих допустить это ограбление на виду – большевики сменили полк. Ограбят завтра при помощи этой новой стражи.
