Classified according to the Russian system, the Russians had 693 light field guns opposed to 284 enemy guns, 84 light howitzers opposed to 178 enemy, and 337 so-called heavy guns and howitzers opposed to 66 enemy. The 11th Army had about fifty aeroplanes and the 7th Army about seventy, including six of large type.The enemy had known all along of our selection of this area, but he did not imagine till June 23rd that we had serious intentions of attacking. Information given him by deserters enabled him to follow every move. For instance, it had been necessary to relieve the Guard Corps from the right of the nth Army in order to concentrate it in rear of the striking force. The day after the relieving corps, the 1st Turkistan, took its place in the line, a N.C.O. and a private went over to the German trenches and returned two hours later drunk and with supplies of cognac and propaganda literature. An officer ordered his men to fire on them as they staggered back, but the men refused. Enemy spies passed freely backwards and forwards through the lines of the XXXIVth Corps. It was wished to concentrate by night, but many units refused to march except in the day.

During the night it continued to rain, reviving the air. The day started wonderfully. We walked to Ifess. At 2 o'clock we went to the park to get good soil and then worked in the vegetable garden. Before dinner I helped the gardener water the flower beds. Towards evening the temperature dropped to 9 degrees and there was a light breeze.

Today in Petrograd there is a large demonstration: they are carrying posters with writings, “Down with the government!”, “Down with war!” Same here: accompanied by the sounds of the Marseillaise they marched through the whole yard to the tombs of the “victims of the revolution”!!! I think that the demonstration was mostly manifested in silly speeches.

I am terribly worried about all the Cadet and many Jewish, worried about the welfare, ineptness and unwillingness to radically reorganize the structure of the soul and head. The New York Times

Serge Basset, a distinguished French war correspondent attached to the British armies, was killed by rifle fire while watching the fighting about the Lens salient. Although several correspondents have been wounded, Basset is the first journalist to be killed in the field during the present war. He had been awarded the Legion of Honor for literary and dramatic work. He will be buried with military honors.
