Few of the infantry units were actively mutinous, but almost every division had one bad regiment. The cavalry and artillery were sound.

The corps inspectors of artillery proposed to destroy the enemy’s first line trenches by five hours’ fire and then to attack, but this proposal was over-ruled by the Commander-in-Chief on the advice of Captain Vagneux, of the French Artillery. It was finally arranged that the nth Army, together with the XLIst Corps of the 7th Army, should commence their artillery preparation at daylight on June 29th, and the other corps of the 7th Army— Vllth Siberian, XXXIVth and XXIInd—at daylight on the 30th. The attack was to be launched at 10 a.m. on July 1st, but the 4th Finland Rifle Division and the Czecho-Slovak Brigade postponed their attack till the morning of the 2nd.

The artillery preparation, to which the hostile guns made little reply, destroyed the enemy’s wire and all the defences in his first fortified zone.

The Vlth Corps took the enemy’s first three lines of trench in twenty minutes, practically without loss. The village of Koniuchy was occupied by the 2nd Finland Division, but as liquor was found there, the other divisions of the corps were held back. General Maimaievski, the Commander of the 4th Division, marched to the attack at its head.

During the night it continued to rain, reviving the air. The day started wonderfully. We walked to Ifess. At 2 o'clock we went to the park to get good soil and then worked in the vegetable garden. Before dinner I helped the gardener water the flower beds. Towards evening the temperature dropped to 9 degrees and there was a light breeze.

Today in Petrograd there is a large demonstration: they are carrying posters with writings, “Down with the government!”, “Down with war!” Same here: accompanied by the sounds of the Marseillaise they marched through the whole yard to the tombs of the “victims of the revolution”!!! I think that the demonstration was mostly manifested in silly speeches.

The New York Times

Serge Basset, a distinguished French war correspondent attached to the British armies, was killed by rifle fire while watching the fighting about the Lens salient. Although several correspondents have been wounded, Basset is the first journalist to be killed in the field during the present war. He had been awarded the Legion of Honor for literary and dramatic work. He will be buried with military honors.
