Though Kerenski worked hard as Minister of War, he was still, before everything, the revolutionary. When three German prisoners—the first taken—were led past his observation-post, he sent to ask them, not the number of German troops on their left and right and rear, but to what political party they belonged, and whether there would soon be a revolution in Germany. The honest men replied that they did not belong to any political party. They did not know anything about the interior of Germany, but at the front, where they had been the whole war, there was no sign of a revolution.

The Minister of War either really thought or pretended he thought that a great victory had been gained. He sent off a rhetorical telegram to the Premier : “ To-day has furnished the reply once and for all to the malicious and slanderous attacks on the organisation of the Russian army, based on democratic principles. I earnestly beg of you to sanction urgently, in the name of the free people, my presentation of red revolutionary standards to the regiments which took part in the battle of July 1st.” Prince Lvov replied, sanctioning the proposal and stating with unconscious truth that “ July 1st has shown to the whole world the might of a revolutionary army, organised on democratic lines and inspired by a fervent belief in the ideals of the revolution.

During the night it continued to rain, reviving the air. The day started wonderfully. We walked to Ifess. At 2 o'clock we went to the park to get good soil and then worked in the vegetable garden. Before dinner I helped the gardener water the flower beds. Towards evening the temperature dropped to 9 degrees and there was a light breeze.

Today in Petrograd there is a large demonstration: they are carrying posters with writings, “Down with the government!”, “Down with war!” Same here: accompanied by the sounds of the Marseillaise they marched through the whole yard to the tombs of the “victims of the revolution”!!! I think that the demonstration was mostly manifested in silly speeches.

I am terribly worried about all the Cadet and many Jewish, worried about the welfare, ineptness and unwillingness to radically reorganize the structure of the soul and head. The New York Times

Serge Basset, a distinguished French war correspondent attached to the British armies, was killed by rifle fire while watching the fighting about the Lens salient. Although several correspondents have been wounded, Basset is the first journalist to be killed in the field during the present war. He had been awarded the Legion of Honor for literary and dramatic work. He will be buried with military honors.
