More than eleven hundred Industrial Workers of the World were deported from Bisbee, Arizona, today, aboard twenty-four cattle cars. Their announced destination was Columbus, N.M. The men were driven from the city by Deputy Sheriffs and about 2,000 armed men, members of an organization known as the Citizens’ Protective League.
Two men were killed during the work of deportation. The victim were Orson McRae, a member of the Citizens’ Protective League and shift boss at one of the Copper Queen mines, and James Brew, a former employe of the Denn mine.
A strike was called here by the metal workers branch two weeks ago. Since then, according to officials, scores of strangers have been in Bisbee. These men are alleged to have prevented miners from returning to work. Plans for the “roundup” of alleged undesirables were made at midnight by Harry C. Wheeler, Sheriff of Cochise County. Within two hours the Sheriff had sworn in 1200 men as various points at 4 o’clock this morning. When the bands of citizens assembled, those who were not already received rifles and revolvers with instructions to use them only in self-defense.
When it comes to ‘food’ everything is ‘worse’. I find this, for the time being, quite healthy; sometimes I eat just once a day and feel like I could soar because of it.
Jung’s patient sent me his new work about unconscious processes, so that I could change my mind about his noble self. It dates back to 1917, but is nothing more than a clumsy retelling of the same thing that he accused me of.
I’m not a fan of Plekhanov, and his ideas are alien to me. But now I feel a great deal of respect for him and he touches me. He could be the most popular and glorified man in Russia, he is the long-time leader of Russian Social Democracy. To achieve this he would have had to become just a bit of a demagogue, to embark on the path of flattery and indulgence to mass instincts.
To my indescribable joy, after four months of melancholy waiting, I at last received a whole package of wonderful letters from my beloved Alix. When I saw the familiar handwriting I felt as if I had come back to life and become a new person. I imagined what pleasure I would experience over the next few days as I read the letters.
Returning to the front, I am glad to bring a greeting from the men of the land, from the rural population of the Ukraine. I am particularly gladdened by the greetings expressed in the fraternal Ukrainian language. For two hundred years, your language has been considered criminal, and has been subject to all manner of persecutions. See more
