All land belonging to landowners and all private land, as well as appanage holdings, church holdings and so on, must be given to the people immediately, without the need for any redemption payments. Private ownership of land must be eliminated altogether;
that is to say, the right of ownership of all land must belong to the people alone, and the disposal of that land should be carried out by local democratic institutions.
I have been left with a great many indelible impressions from all these days. In particular, the memory of Protopopov (in a cell)...Some day people will no longer be judged, no matter what they have been like. When people experience pain and humiliation, their childlike traits return.
The steamer set sail down the Mother Volga. I delighted in the journey, gazing at the river banks and breathing in the fresh Volga air. The only hint of the recent revolutionary unrest was the fact that now and again, third class passengers went up onto the top deck to chew on sunflower seeds. But actually, they behaved themselves.
A telegram came in the night announcing the dismissal of General Alekseyev from his post, with an appointment at the disposal of the Provisional Government, and his replacement with General Brusilov. The commander-in-chief, who was asleep, was woken by the quartermaster general and handed the telegram. See more
The old chief was shaken to the core, and tears came to his eyes. So for the time being, he is leaving the limelight, a very important statesman and military leader among whose virtues (or faults) was an unswerving devotion to the Provisional Government
I own that I feel very anxious for the safety of the Emperor… If he once gets inside the walls of the prison of St. Peter and St. Paul, I doubt he will ever come out alive.
It was a warm, overcast day. I went for a walk until 11 o'clock with Olga, Anastasia and Alexis. We had lunch at 12 o'clock. During the day we spent three hours in the garden, on the island and the pond. See more
Towards the end it started to rain, and it continued until 8 o'clock. The aroma coming in through the windows was wonderful. Today is the anniversary of the Army attack on the south-western front. How different my sentiments were from what they are now.
The new Commander-in-Chief of the South-West Front was General Gutor, who had commenced the war as Chief of Staff of the 4th Army. In 1915 he had been transferred to the command of the 34th Division, and he had since commanded the Vlth Corps and the nth Army. He had been wounded more than once. He appointed General Duldionin, late General Quartermaster, to be his Chief of Staff. See more
In an interview on June 5th, General Dukhonin said that the Italian representatives at G.H.Q. had asked for a Russian offensive, and he explained that such an offensive " could not go far ” ! When the 1916 offensive was launched all units in front were up to strength and there were 200,000 drafts in rear, but now units in front were 200,000 short of establishment and there were only 60,000 men behind. The horses were half starved. Still, he thought that the offensive would remind the Germans that they had still to reckon with the Russian army, and might make them ask for peace! He would be satisfied with 200,000 prisoners!
