Gained by all sorts of tricks 18 pounds of flour; to get sugar is not yet possible, I will try tomorrow. If I get it, I'll buy a pood, or even more: there is a sugar hunger ahead.
Everywhere you can hear: "Russia is enveloped in anarchy, a hundred billion public debt will lead us to poverty, the state will break up into pieces and perish." Why there is such cowardice, or they think that our revolution should be a continuous blessing, which immediately falls from the sky?
Stick to your schoolboy ideals as their guide through life and consider national service a privilege and not a duty.
I've read with excitement some news in newspapers that Jews went the Pope. The project on permission to return to Jerusalem, promising to treat with respect to Christian shrines. Prophecies are clearly coming true. Thy works are wonderful, O Lord! See more
The Pope was and still is the head of the Christian church. Jews turned to the Pope, and not to the Patriarch of Constantinople and not to our Synod, which would be more correct.
We, Russians, pretend to be equal with cultured nations, but we do not want to leave our barbarian skills and habits. How difficult it is for them to stop putting excrements on walls or latrines and keep self-cleanliness, respect the environment and all objects of everyday life!
The blasphemy of comparing Christ and Nietzsche is not that Christ suffered more, but Nietzsche less. Blasphemy - obviously - in the disparity of planes.
After supper on the 11th General Kornilov asked me to come into his study for a talk. The room, which also served as a bedroom for the General, was in the Palace of the Austrian Viceroys of the Bukovina, and looked out on a garden with a beautiful statue of the murdered Austrian Empress. I had talked in the same room during the preceding year with Generals Lechit- ski and Kaledin, two of Russia’s finest soldiers who had been already sacrificed to the hatred of the mob. See more
Poor Kornilov was very pessimistic. He said that the way Gurko had been treated showed clearly that the present Government was determined to remove everyone who had decision of character and possessed some influence with the troops, and to keep only such men as Brusilov, who agreed to any madness they proposed. He agreed with me that, if the coming offensive failed, the Allies would have nothing more to hope for from Russia, and he said : “ If Russia stops fighting, I hope you will take me as a private soldier in the British Army, for I will never make peace with the Germans.”I left the 8th Army the next day and spent the succeeding three weeks in the nth and 7th Armies, which had been detailed to deliver the main attack.
London. Members of the British National Seamen's and Firemen's Union today seized and imprisoned Frederick W. Jowett, President of the Independent Labor Party, and James Ramsay Macdonald, Chairman of that party, both members of Parliament, who were about to sail for Petrograd. See more
An enthusiastic demonstration was held this afternoon in Trafalgar Square to protest against permitting Mr. MacDonald and Mr. Jowett to proceed to Petrograd on account of their supposed pacifist leanings. The meeting was opened by reading of the following telegram from Captain Tupper of the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union: “I have MacDonald and Jowett prisoners. The crew refuses to sail with them.”
