I was close to the youth work. The youth were grouped into the union “Light and Knowledge”, and were developing their program. Among the boys were Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, anarchists and non-partisans. The program is archaic and primitive, but the controversy surrounding it is very interesting. For example, one of the points held that everyone should learn how to sew.
Then, one lad - a Bolshevik – remarked: “Why should everyone learn to sew? Of course, girls need to know how, as her husband won’t be able to sew a button to his trousers, but why should everyone learn?!” These words brought on a storm of indignation. Not only the girls, but all the boys were indignant, leaping from their seats: “It’s the wife that should sew the button to the trousers? What are you on about? Do you want to support the old female slavery? A wife is her husband’s comrade, not his servant!” The boy whose idea it was that only women should learn to sew was forced to surrender.
They gnaw seeds! This stupid and dangerous disease has consumed all of Russia. Seeds are gnawed by women, children, boys and soldiers, soldiers, soldiers… Impartial historians, as they are called, will call this period of the Russian revolution a period of seed gnawing. See more
Psychiatrists will pay attention to this disease, will study it and probably place it into the same category of nervous diseases, which includes biting nails, various tics, involuntary grimaces and obsessive gestures. This disease needs to be fought and it is necessary to take decisive and urgent measures.
It was a very warm day with a very strong smell of burning in the air. In the morning I took a walk around the'park. After lunch we chopped up three dry trees; all of them were at the place near the Arsenal. I took a ride in the canoe while others bathed at the end of the pond. The head officer of the Guard, Shymovich, of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, is generally disliked.
Recertification of people exempt from military service. Enlistment, enlistment! Idiots.
Men in some units had said : “ We will attack, but if we fail, we will kill the Corps Staff.” A soldier at a meeting had proposed that in the attack the corps commander should lead, followed by the three divisional commanders, followed by twelve regiment commanders and all the officers, the men coming last of all. The worst regiment in the XLIXth Corps was the 13th Finland Regiment, which had been corrupted by Ensign Kirilenko, a half-crazy individual who was later to attain an unenviable notoriety. This man, in a speech in the committee of the nth Army on May 12th, had expressed his belief in the existence of secret treaties between Great Britain and Germany. On the same occasion he reported the result of a “ plebiscite ” he had organised in the 13th Finland Regiment to decide the course of action to be followed by Russia in each of the following eventualities.
The reply, he stated, was in each case “War,” but in the third case “ War against the Allies.” He calmly contemplated war against the world, and said that the worst that could befall Russia would be the loss of the Caucasus, Finland, Siberia and Poland.
The bourgeois press is corrupted. It lies and vilifies without restraint. Perhaps we will begin taking them to court.
Unfortunately, far from all of the speeches currently being made at the All-Russia Conference of Soviets of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies can be called intelligent. Lenin and his associates seem to have lost all their capacity for reason. Our well-known founder of a new religion, Father Anatoly Lunacharsky, has suffered the same loss. See more
Truth to tell, however, one ought to have long since given up on all these people. A dry well pumps no water, as the proverb goes. The attacks on the Provisional Government by our so-called extreme leftists serve as ample demonstration that this proverb contains a completely undeniable truth.
The Empress sent me a nice note and a picture with her blessings and well wishes. It was very thoughtful. She wrote in Russian as the commandant does not understand English. They eat their radish and think it’s wonderful: the fruits of their labour.
We put our stakes only on the development of a worldwide proletarian revolution; we have no prospect of an amicable concord with Western European imperialism, nor of one with the German General Staff...
There’s nothing but global proletarian revolution on our horizon.
