We were visited by 200 soldiers, who came with music, and played very well. First they played the Marseillaise, and at Tolstoy’s grave played a funereal march. We had many conversations about Lev Nikolaevich and about the Tsarist family.

I returned to Petrograd. A crowd of 60,000, an honour guard from the Semyonovsky Regiment. As I arrived I was almost crushed by the crowd. The officers offered to carry me on their shoulders. I refused.

Who says there are no drunks on the street? Are the soldiers really not drinking? It was most strange to see a drunken officer on the tram, fraternising with the soldiers (who were evidently laughing at him), a scene which I found physically painfully. It made the blood flow in my old veins. See more
